Financial planning after divorce or separation.
Divorce or separation may involve decisions about the family home, savings and pensions. Pension benefits can be significant and may be complex to value and divide, so legal and, where appropriate, specialist actuarial input may be needed.
We can help you understand the potential impact on your pensions, investments and longer-term financial plans. We do not advise on the terms of the legal settlement and cannot recommend how assets should be divided between parties. Where appropriate, once we have taken time to understand your circumstances and what you need, we may also advise on the pension and investment arrangements required to implement a pension sharing order.
Who this page is for
- People going through a divorce, separation or civil partnership dissolution.
- People whose solicitor, mediator or collaborative practitioner has suggested speaking to a financial adviser about pensions
- Anyone who wants to understand how an agreed or proposed settlement may affect their pensions, investments and longer-term financial planning
How we may be able to help
Depending on your circumstances, we may:
- Explain, in general terms, the main ways pensions may be dealt with on divorce, such as pension sharing, offsetting or pension attachment. Your solicitor will advise you on the legal options and the terms of any settlement.
- Help you understand the financial information available and prepare questions to discuss with your solicitor or other professional adviser.
- Use financial planning and cashflow modelling to help illustrate the potential impact of proposed or agreed arrangements. This does not include advising on or recommending the terms of any legal settlement.
- Where a pension sharing order is made, once we have taken time to understand your circumstances and depending on the type of pension arrangement involved, we may advise on the regulated pension and investment arrangements required to implement the pension share.
- After the settlement, advise on pensions, investments and protection and help you build a financial plan and cashflow forecast for your new circumstances.
Other support
Your solicitor deals with the legal advice and the terms of your settlement, and an actuary can value your pensions if that's needed. We work alongside them, helping you plan your finances around whatever is agreed.
